PRESS RELEASE

Green Highland ensures Welsh hydroelectric power station keeps providing vital, clean power

Green Highland was selected to provide mechanical service support to the overhaul of the Unit 1 turbine generator at the Maentwrog Hydro-electric power station in North Wales.

The contract has seen Green Highland utilise their expertise and cutting-edge equipment to undertake full internal inspections of moving and control parts on the turbine. The runner and guide vanes were removed, and the rotor unthreaded enabling maintenance to be completed on the generator.

Nuclear Restoration Services Ltd (NRS) operate and manage Maentwrog Hydro-electric power station as a wholly owned subsidiary of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority. NRS   selected the leading independent electrical engineering group Quartzelec to manage the Unit 1 overhaul project. Quartzelec selected Green Highland because of their extensive experience of maintaining sites in the UK and internationally as well as being part of Voith Hydro, a world leading partner to hydropower projects.

As part of the work, the Green Highland team gave two NRS apprentices the opportunity to learn more about hydropower, the servicing work undertaken and how to work collaboratively with multiple contractors on large-scale projects.

Mike Merritt, Maentwrog Station Team Leader, commented:

“The successful completion of the Unit 1 overhaul project was achieved by all involved working together to deliver the requirements of the project; ensuring future operation and continued green generation of electricity from Maentwrog.

“With special thanks to the GHR site team for working with our apprentices, sharing their knowledge and expertise cementing the future for Hydropower.”

Alex Reading, CEO of Green Highland, and Chair of the British Hydropower Association, commented:

“Hydropower is a vital source of clean, locally sourced, predictable power. With the right maintenance, hydropower assets can generate power long into the future. Green Highland, as part of Voith, provide a world leading service to these projects and this is made possible by the expertise and decades of experience of the Green Highland and the Voith team. We are delighted to be working with NRS and Quartzelec to ensure the Maentwrog Plant continues to provide vital power now and for a long time to come.”
